about me

My name is Natalie Ratkovski, and like many creative people, I wear many hats. Above all, I am —
and always have been — a passionate illustrator. Alongside my work as an artist, designer, and
illustrator, I also write non-fiction books. In my books, I delve into complex topics — often from
the realms of science, art, and culture — and aim to make them accessible and visually engaging.
Using both words and images, I seek to spark curiosity, foster understanding, and encourage
readers to view the world through new lenses.

My creative journey began early. I was born in 1977 into a family where artistic expression and
curiosity were a natural part of everyday life. This environment deeply influenced me, shaping
my passion for visual storytelling. Still, growing up during uncertain times led me to initially
pursue a more conventional career path — one that promised security, even if it meant putting
my creative ambitions on hold. Between 1994 and 1998, I studied technical subjects, focusing
on programming and discrete mathematics. Yet even during this period, my creative side found
a way to surface: I began illustrating children’s books about physics and mathematics.

That experience reconnected me with the artistic spirit I had momentarily set aside — and ultimately
paved the way toward a career in communication design. In 2006, I earned my degree in design,
with a specialization in illustration, from the University of Applied Sciences in Dortmund, Germany.
Since then, I have worked professionally as an illustrator and designer, and I continue to share
my passion for visual storytelling wherever I can.
